Passed away at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre on Saturday, August 10, 2024 in his 100th year
It’s with mixed feeling of sadness and admiration that Springwater Sports Heritage records the passing of Alan Johnston. His warmth and thoughtfulness will be missed. Fortunately, endless memories can be shared of his century of enthusiasm and commitment to family, fiends and community. Upon reflection, and unknown to most, Springwater Sports Heritage owes to Alan its resolve to endeavour to be a commendable emissary of Springwater’s sporting achievements and achievers. Ten years ago, through an unsolicited call, he initiated a one-on-one to share his appreciation of the formation of Springwater Sports Heritage and endorsed the significance of affirming a distinguished and acclaimed criterion. With his numerous attributes and outstanding legacy Springwater Sports Heritage is truly privileged and grateful to have Alan as a Springwater Sports Heritage Inductee.

Alan Graham Johnston passed away at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at the age of 99. Alan is survived by his wife Donna (nee Priest). They were married almost 72 years. Alan was the loving father of Cathy Walton (Terry), Gary Johnston (Rita), Colleen Johnston, the late George Johnston (Blanche), and Hugh Johnston (Christy). Alan was grandpa to Lee, Anne, Melissa, Scott, Steven, Jennifer (deceased), Julie, Collin, Graham, Mitchell, Cameron, Owen, and Cole, and great grandpa to 11 great grandchildren.
Alan was born June 29, 1925 at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, ON. He enlisted with the Canadian Army in the Infantry in January 1945 where Alan won the Crossed Rifles and Crown. Alan and his father George G. Johnston ran the Minesing Basket Factory. When it closed down Alan went farming at the age of 30, a decision he was always glad of. He enjoyed working in the bush.
Alan served in Vespra Council for 12 years; 4 of which were as Reeve. Alan had an amazing knowledge of local history.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to friends for all their support and to the Integrated Stroke Unit at RVH for their care.
Visitation will take place at Adams Funeral Home (445 St. Vincent St., Barrie) on Friday, August 23 from 1-3 pm, followed by a private graveside service at Minesing Union Cemetery.
