Lynda Ritchie Narrative

Lynda’s love for baseball began early in life but the highlight of her career was pitching “perfect game”  for her Shanty Bay women’s team.  Lynda’s journey with minor sports in Elmvale began in 1982 when she willingly wrote articles for the newspaper chronicling the hockey wins and losses of many teams in the winter and baseball in the summer. In 1985 Lynda began coaching a minor ball team; scorekeeping for others.
Lynda served on the Executive of Minor Ball as secretary from 1992 to 2012. Many roles in the Minor Hockey organization were assumed by Lynda. She was a member of the booth executive for 15 years in the position of secretary, food purchaser and liaison and a member of the Minor Hockey executive for 6 years taking on the tasks of publicity and obtaining sponsorship while serving many terms as vice president.

Lynda’s community volunteer service included canvassing for the Cancer Society, being involved in the planning and advertising for the annual skating carnival and giving of her time at Huronia Centennial Elementary School in the reading program and as a noon hour supervisor. In recognition of 10 years of volunteering at the school she received the Volunteer Service Award from the Ontario Government.
Lynda’s many contributions to minor sports and her community were recognized when she was named the Citizen of the Year in 2011.  Her wonderful smile greeted everyone who came to pay their way into minor hockey games. This duty she carried out even while battling the cancer that eventually claimed her life.
As a final contribution to the sport she loved, Lynda requested that donations be given in her memory to Elmvale Minor Ball.
