Walter Craig Narrative
Walter was born on the third line of Vespra. He was married to Frances Crittenden and together they raised two boys.
1910 – onwards: Walter learned his good sportsmanship at an early age from the good neighbours on the third who gathered at the Craig homestead to solve the problems of the day, while sitting on a wooden bench. The young folk would come along and play baseball in the orchard across from the wooden bench (the bleachers).
Walter played Catcher for several Midhurst Softball Teams and they won many championships. Walter coached and instilled good sportsmanship characteristics in his young players. He was considered a popular coach with both the old and young.
Horseshoe pitching was a very popular sport, only requiring a couple of pins or stakes driven into the ground forty feet apart and a couple of pairs of discarded horseshoes to throw over the stakes.
Walter’s spare time was spent playing checkers, crokinole or crib with friends and family members. Hunter Russell or Midhurst built a King Crib board that enabled Walter and a competitor to pull up a kitchen chair and have a game of crib.
He loved hockey, however due to an injury at birth it was one of the only sports he watched from the sidelines.
