Lou Turner’s list of accomplishments is quite lengthy and clearly shows what a dedicated and talented athlete he was, but he was more than that. Lou loved hockey, and fastball, and he devoted his life to curling. Lou helped to build and then maintain the Elmvale Curling Club; he served as manager there for 23 years. Even when Lou became legally blind due to macular degeneration, he curled. Lou loved curling so much; he spoke about the upcoming season even as his health deteriorated and he passed on. Few people have lived a life as committed to sports as Lou Turner.

The list of Lou Turner’s accomplishments is astounding. Lou excelled at Curling, Fastball, and Hockey, receiving the trophies and accolades to prove it. It wasn’t just playing so well at the sports he loved that makes Lou stand out; his dedication did not stop at athletics. Lou helped to build the structures of the Elmvale Curling Club and the hockey arena as a bricklayer. He contributed to installing the artificial ice in the arenas and the lighting at the ballpark. Lou was instrumental in making the sports community in Elmvale what it has become.
Lou was well known for his inclusivity. He welcomed new curlers to the Elmvale Curling club with open arms and made life-long friends. He served as manager of the curling club for 23 years, and his love of the sport knew no bounds. He was the icemaker, custodian, maintenance and repair man, and treasurer. When Lou’s health deteriorated and he became legally blind, he still continued to curl with audible instruction. He even spoke of the upcoming curling season even as he was leaving this world.
