Homer "Ormand" Barrett Narrative
Homer was born and raised in Elmvale where he resided for his entire life. The middle sibling of three, Mel, Homer, and Jerry were raised by their grandmother.
Homer married Doris Thompson and they had two sons, Kent and Sean, who were Homer’s pride and joy. The Barrett family resided on Queen Street in Elmvale.
For many years Homer was employed at 13” X”, a munitions depot at Base Borden. At the time of his early passing he was a valued employee of Hill Refrigeration in Barrie
Homer died of cancer at the age of forty two. Following his passing Doris and her sons eventually moved to London. Their connection to Elmvale remains strong as they have many relatives in the area and their years in Elmvale will always be a valued part of their life.
Homer was a highly talented athlete whose ability on the ice and ball diamond was exceptional. His stick handling wizardly on the ice and his smooth fielding and strong hitting on the ball diamond was complemented by remarkable sportsmanship. His character was held in the highest esteem by teammates, opponents, game officials, sports fans and his community. He was revered by the Elmvale sporting community and to this day mention of his name brings forth awe to those who personally knew him or about him. Though his life was short memories of his athletic prowess are legendary.
His inclusion in the athlete category of the Springwater Sports Heritage Hall of Fame is a fitting reward and tribute to this accomplished athlete and gives well deserved recognition to his contribution to the rich history of sports in Springwater.
